International efforts towards Middle East peace must be matched by steps on the ground – UN envoy

Noting that international engagement on reviving the Middle East peace process over the last three months reconfirmed the consensus that the two-state solution is the only means of realizing the national aspirations of both peoples a senior United Nations official called for continued expansion of the momentum into a concrete vision to end the wider conflict.

22.03.2017 World Water Day

22.03.2017 World Water Day

Water is essential for health, food security and economic progress. Yet, some 780 million people worldwide are without a source of clean drinking water, and one in three people live in a country with moderate to high water stress. World Water Day promotes the importance of water, its conservation, and the sustainable management of freshwater resources. States are invited to raise awareness through documentaries, round tables, seminars and other events related to the conservation and development of water resources. The UN General Assembly declared this Day in its 1992 resolution A/RES/47/193, on the recommendation of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, held that same year in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

21.03.2017 World Down Syndrome Day

21.03.2017 World Down Syndrome Day

Down Syndrome is a genetic occurrence caused by extra material in chromosome 21 that results in intellectual disability. It is not yet known why this occurs. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities reaffirms that such persons, including those with Down Syndrome, are entitled to human rights on an equal basis with others. World Down Syndrome Day provides the opportunity to raise public awareness and reaffirm that all individuals living with Down Syndrome can, given the appropriate support and opportunity, achieve their potential and make an important contribution to society. The UN General Assembly declared this Day in its 2011 resolution A/RES/66/149.
